From Wikipedia
John Lennon was the leader of the English iconic rock band "The Beatles" from Liverpool, England, whose members were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed popular music bands in history. The Beatles were the best-selling musical band of the 20th century. The Recording Industry Association of American certified the Beatles as the top-selling band of all time in America based on U.S. sales of singles and albums. Their innovative music and cultural impact helped to define the 1960's. Although their initial musical style was rooted in the sounds of 1950s rock and roll, the group explored a great variety of genres ranging from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock. Their clothes, hairstyles, and statements made them trend-setters, while their growing social awareness saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.
John Lennon was the leader of this iconic band. He had two sons: Julian, with his first wife Cynthia and Sean, with his second wife, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono. John Lennon was shot and murdered in New York City on December 8, 1980 in front of the Dakota apartment building by delusional and possibly psychotic Mark David Chapman as John and Ono returned home after a recording session.(more)

The Assassination Of John Lennon
The scene outside New York's spooky old Dakota apartment building on the evening of December 8, 1980, was as surreal as it was horrifying. John Lennon, probably the world's most famous rock star, lay semiconscious, hemorrhaging from four flat-tipped bullets blasted into his back.
