| Raised Catholic From: Scarrie "Exactly. I was raised Catholic and really never bought into it. When I voiced my doubts/skepticism about religious beliefs, it was met with a harsh reaction. I learned the path of least resistance. Among my immediate family, it's understood that I don't believe BUT it's never EVER discussed. The conversation would tear apart my family. So I pretend to pray and take part in religious ceremonies (baptisms, silly rituals, etc) and feel completely awkward. There is so much external pressure to not disclose non-theist beliefs and so much reward to 'play along'. I'm very aware that if certain paople knew my beliefs that they will not trust me or see me the same way they do now. I am usually very outspoken and speak up about many beliefs and defend injustices but in certain company, I can't bring myslef to share my (non)religious views. Christians would NEVER tolerate having to hide or be ashamed of their beliefs. Why should I? We are the most despised and loathed people and the easiest to attack. When we are attacked, it's the old 'blame the victim'." |
