Evolution as religion???
by Jennifer Umbehant

There are those who argue that belief in evolution and science is just like belief in a god and that this belief is a religion.

So lets consider for the sake of argument that belief in evolution is a religion. Let's imagine a place where all the believers in evolution get together in a forum a few times a week. We worship evolution and revel in our beliefs of evolution and take up a collection so that we can further propagate the Earth with other believers in evolution, build vast buildings that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and other such tasks - all in the name of evolution.

Lets do a little comparison shopping, if you will.

First, let's start with the belief in the Judeo-Christian God Yahweh. What has this belief gotten us???

It has given us the right to kill in our God's name. (They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. 2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB)

It has given us the Crusades in which Muslims and Christians fought for religious reasons. It is estimated that 9 million people were killed.

It has given us the Inquisition in which people were tortured for days - weeks if they lasted that long - until death.

It has told us that we are the center of the universe and that our world is flat. It has even told us that we can reach the heavens - physically. (there are still people who believe this shit.) The Bible tells us that men started to build a tower to heaven so god came down to put an end to it - he gave them all different languages so that they wouldn't be able to communicate and build a tower to heaven. This showed the belief that not only did men think that heaven was a physical place, but that GOD DID TOO. We have now been to the skies and the space above our planet. There is no heaven there. Thanks to Professor Jay Huebner at UNF for pointing this out! He says the following in reference to Genesis, Chapter 11, verses 1-9: "This story was used to explain in my Sunday school where all of the languages on Earth came from, but it incorporates the idea that God thought those engineers could reach heaven unless their construction project was stopped. This is the oldest known account of engineers trying to reach the heavens in what would later be called 'space programs'"

We have a God that tells us to sacrifice our own children and dash them against the rocks. (Fortunate is the man who will seize and dash your little ones against the rock!) Psalm 137 verse 9

We are told that homosexuals should be put to death. "If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

We are taught that women should keep their damn mouths shut.

We are taught that nakedness, masturbation and sex is sinful.

We are given a jealous, loving, frightful, kind, easy to anger, forgiving, sadist God who created us. Some of those things just don't add up.

Hmm, well I could go on, but I'm depressing myself.

Let's move on to EVOLUTION. Okay, lets see what the BELIEF in evolution has given us.

The belief in evolution has first given us the consensus that we evolved from lower life-forms over time. Okay. That doesn't sound like anything based on emotion which gods and religion tend to be. A link about evolution

The belief in evolution has helped scientists understand how certain viruses, like HIV, becomes resistant to treatment through natural selection and gives them ways to counteract this evolution through using many different drugs, varying the amounts of the drugs and the length of time any one drug is given. About the evolution of HIV
About the evolution of bacteria

Because of belief in evolution, scientists are able to study the evolution of the avian flu in birds and animals in order to understand how to create vaccines for it. Avian Flu and evolution

Belief in evolution gives us great advances in the human genome project. Why the Human Genome Project is beneficial to humanity

Belief in evolution is important to stem cell research. Eugenics

Belief in evolution is important to biotechnology. A goldmine of info

Belief in evolution has given us a testable model of biology that proves true time and time again. An interesting read

Belief in evolution has helped us understand the overwhelming evidence for it. See my blog post on evidence for evolution.

Belief in evolution has given us major technological advancements in agriculture. Agriculture

Anyway, I could go on and on. See my post on evidence for evolution.

Point of the matter is, if you want to call Evolution a religion - fine. Have it your way. But I'll take my religion over your religion any day.
